Oregon Casinos & Gambling

Oregon Gambling - Oregon Gambling Forum - Oregon Casinos

There are currently nine Tribe Casinos in the state of Oregon. Each of these Native Indian tribe casinos are bound by Oregon law that requires set limits on their casino operations. All casinos here offer blackjack, video poker, video slots, video blackjack, video keno, and pull tabs. Some casinos offer roulette, bingo and simulcasting of horse and greyhound races. Finally, Casinos in the state of Oregon are open 24 hours and the gambling age limit is 18 years old (21 if liquor is served in the establishment).

In 1997, the tribal groups sought permission from the state of Oregon to expand their casino operations, while offering to donate part of their revenues to charity across Oregon?s eleven regions. The proposal was approved, making Oregon the only state to formalize a tribal casino-government compact, with proceeds going to charity. The money from tribal casinos is used to finance education, health care and housing, among other charitable activities.

Oregon permits both the lottery and video gaming devices. The first Oregon lottery ticket was sold in April 1985. By a state initiative, the operation of lottery games in this state was needed to finance various civic projects and help the state?s economy. Therefore, by Oregon?s Constitution, bars and taverns are allowed up to five VLTs or video lottery terminals with video poker. The operation of such machines was legalized in 1991. Further, VLT machines have become huge money generating machines, earning up to 528 million dollars in recent years. Finally, Oregon is one of only five states in the United States to allow video poker.

Video lottery machines are limited to give a maximum payout of $600, while the minimum bet should only be at $2. The machine will issue tickets, not cash, and payout must be then taken to the cashier. Further, video lottery machines are the same as regular video gaming devices but are termed lottery terminals because it is regulated by Oregon?s Lottery Commission. Much of the revenue of these machines goes to the same agency (Oregon Lottery Commission). Today, the Oregon Lottery has about 3,500 retailers, 800 video lottery games and 1,500 combined lottery and video lottery retailers.

Alternatively, Oregon offers gamblers the opportunity to enjoy race tracks. There are six horse racing tracks in Oregon. The tradition of horse racing became very popular back in the early 20?s when state fairs featured horse racing as one of its main attractions. Further, there are currently over 6,000 pari-mutuel races that were run in the last couple of years, and thousands of these races were simulcast live in other states.
