Video poker machines
Video poker is very popular in North Carolina, and can be found throughout the state in convenience stores and other establishments. However, players are only allowed to legally win merchandise up to the value of $10, not cash. Strict legal restrictions were introduced in 2004 on the use of video poker machines, which include a mandatory fee of $300 on every machine and a fine of $5,000 imposed on those found to be operating machines illegally, as well as tighter penalties on cash payouts.
North Carolina Lottery
The latest development in gambling in North Carolina is the passing of a bill in 2005 to allow the development of a North Carolina lottery. The lottery is intended to help fund education in the state.
Harrah's Smoky Mountains Casino, in Casino Drive, Cherokee, is operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee who signed a compact with the state governor in 1994 to allow certain types of video gambling. The gambling must be based only on games of skill, and the machines are required to return a minimum of 83% and a maximum of 98%.
